Dr. Tony Kim and Dr. Derek Bouma will complete a thorough exam to evaluate your teeth, gums, existing restorations, all other oral anatomy and structures of the head & neck. They will also address any aesthetic concerns you might have and look at the big picture. TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) evaluation, teeth alignment and occlusion (your “bite”), sleep apnea and oral cancer screening are few of the things they will look at.

Sometimes a tooth must be extracted to remove the infection, and when saving it is not plausible. Infection in the jawbone from tooth infections has the potential to spread to other spaces which can be extremely dangerous.

• Tooth can need an extraction for causes such as:
• Large carious lesion (cavity) and extensive tooth structure loss
• Fractured teeth and/or cracks in teeth
• Advanced gum disease (bone loss)
• Infection and/or failing previous endodontic treatments (root canals) that do not have a good chance of success

The third and last set of molars to erupt is often referred to as “wisdom teeth”. Their development can vary greatly and can erupt anywhere from 14 to 30 years of age.

Some people never get a full set of wisdom teeth.

If a patient has sufficient room in their jaws and the wisdom teeth grows out properly, they often do not need to be taken out.

However, quite often wisdom teeth can do more harm and we often need to act before they become more risky and dangerous.

At every examination or recall appointments, Dr. Kim and Dr. Bouma will perform a thorough intra-oral and extra-oral head and neck examination to screen for any pathologies. This also includes any pathologies detectable on radiographs.

Early diagnosis will drastically decrease mortality and increase treatment success. They will look for any lumps and bumps or any changes to the soft tissue inside the mouth that may look suspicious.
