Why Choose Traditional Metal Braces?

At our Pathways Dental Clinic, we also offer traditional dental braces. These braces are strong and tend not to stain the teeth. They are comprised of individual brackets that are cemented to each tooth and accompanied by an archwire, which constantly asserts gentle pressure on the teeth. Traditional braces are generally metal but are also available in clear synthetic material and “tooth-coloured” ceramic. The ceramic brackets are generally more comfortable than the metal alternative but can become discoloured by coffee, wine, smoking and certain foods.

Traditional fixed braces or brackets and wires can treat many issues:

  • Crooked Teeth
  • Crowding
  • Spacing between the Teeth
  • Uneven teeth
  • Overbite
  • Underbite

Fixed braces stay on your teeth throughout the duration of treatment and typically provide faster results than Clear Aligners like Invisalign.

Benefits of Metal Braces:

  • Irremovable: Patients that tend to lose things or may forget to change their trays will be pleased to know that traditional braces stay on the teeth for the duration of the treatment, so there is no chance of losing anything which could potentially delay your treatment.
  • Treatment time: Because metal braces can’t be removed, the treatment time can often be much quicker than Invisalign. They are worn 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and can range in length of time worn depending on the patient’s case, but typically 1.5-2 years is the norm for teenagers. For patients or parents worried about the self-discipline it takes to wear aligners 22-24 hours per day, the fixed option may be a better choice as they cannot be removed.
  • Effectiveness: Fixed braces can be a superior solution when it comes to patients with more complex dental issues
  • Cleaning: Cleaning teeth with braces requires regular brushing and flossing just as you do without braces.
  • Follow up dental visits: Typically, you should visit your dentist every month, where they will change wires and elastics to make sure the teeth are moving smoothly.
