Botox® is the trade name for Botulinum Toxin. It is a neuromodulator and it is a purified protein. It is injected into muscles and it blocks the neurotransmission of the nerves that innervate the muscles. It does NOT paralyze the muscle, only down modulates it to decrease it’s contraction.
Areas that we typically treat for facial wrinkle “softening” is forehead, corners of the eyes (“Crow’s Feet”), between the eyes (Glabella).
Neuromodulators are also used in mastication (chewing) muscles, such as the massetters and temporalis, to treat Bruxism (“clenching and grinding”), and tension headaches. For some patients, this provides extreme relief of pain that no other treatment is able to. This is called Myofacial pain.
